Artwork & Branding

Why Artwork and Branding Matter

Your cover art is the first visual impression of your music — it appears on every streaming platform, social feed, and press feature. A cohesive visual identity builds recognition and communicates your artistic world before a single note plays.

Cover Art Requirements

Every distributor has minimum specifications. The universal standards:

Design Principles

  • Readability at small sizes: Your art will appear as a 50×50 px thumbnail. Make sure the title/artist name is legible — or omit text entirely.
  • Color palette: Choose 2–3 colors that carry across your visual identity (social media, press photos, merchandise).
  • Typography: Use 1–2 fonts maximum. Match the tone of your music (serif for classical/folk, geometric sans for electronic).
  • Consistency across releases: An EP or album series should feel visually connected.

Building Your Visual Brand

Artist Name & Logo

Consider how your artist name appears across all media. Create a simple wordmark — your name in a specific font — that you use consistently on social profiles, press photos, and merchandise.

Photography

Professional press photos are essential for playlist features, blog coverage, and label inquiries. Invest in 2–3 hero shots and a variety of candid images that tell your story. Ensure photographers grant you commercial use rights in writing.

Color and Mood

Your visual world should match your sonic world. Dream pop artists often use soft, desaturated palettes; hip-hop artists tend toward bold, high-contrast imagery; folk artists use warm, natural tones. Be intentional.

Canva, Adobe Express, and Figma

If hiring a designer isn't in budget, these tools offer professional-grade templates. Canva Pro ($13/mo) has a music cover template library specifically sized at 3000×3000 px.

Branding Platforms

  • Canva — easy drag-and-drop design, free tier available
  • Adobe Firefly / Photoshop — professional tools, CC subscription required
  • 99designs — crowdsource artwork from professional designers ($299+)
  • Fiverr — hire individual designers for a fixed price ($15–$200+)

AI-generated artwork

Platforms vary in their policies on AI-generated cover art. Spotify and Apple Music currently allow it, but rules are evolving. Some press outlets and editorial teams decline to feature AI-generated covers. Be transparent about your process.
